Emotion-Aware Offices: The New Face of Facial Recognition Technology
Architects and designers are now trying to use facial recognition technology not for security, but for human-centered design. "Emotion detection" software aims to create healthier and more productive work environments by analyzing emotions such as stress, happiness, or fatigue from facial expressions.
An experiment conducted at Perkins&Will's London office in 2021 tested the potential of this technology. Elements such as natural light, color palette, and desk arrangement were redesigned using data from sensors. The goal was to improve employees' mood and increase productivity. However, the technology is still not perfect. Cultural differences, personal habits, and momentary expressions can lead to misinterpretation of emotions. Nevertheless, with the right ethical framework and data security, these systems have the potential to revolutionize office design in the future.
Although limited for today, the workplaces of tomorrow aim to understand employees' emotions, not just their facial expressions.
